Mehbooba Mufti Criticises National Conference Government for Failing People

SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has sharply criticized the ruling National Conference (NC) government, accusing it of failing to address the genuine concerns of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and instead prioritizing bureaucratic matters over pressing public issues. Mufti alleged that the NC government has neglected critical concerns such as youth incarceration, unemployment, and employee terminations, urging them to focus on the real problems facing the populace.

During a party convention in Kulgam, Mufti stated that the NC government had ignored initiatives aimed at benefiting the poor and marginalized sections of society. She highlighted concerns about people fearing the loss of land following the abrogation of special status and the anxieties of tribal communities regarding their forest dwellings. Mufti specifically pointed to the rejection of a PDP-proposed bill to regularize state land in possession of poor residents, contrasting it with the passage of a bill that she claimed primarily benefits hoteliers and the wealthy.

The PDP chief also criticized the government for rejecting a proposal to regularize daily wagers. She accused the NC of failing to deliver on its promises despite securing a significant mandate from the electorate, suggesting a surrender to the central government’s agenda. Mufti drew parallels with her own past government’s approach, stating that she had managed to keep the BJP’s influence in check, whereas the current NC leadership, she claimed, has yielded to pressure from New Delhi and surrendered key power projects.

Further elaborating on the government’s misplaced priorities, Mufti questioned the convening of meetings over administrative transfers of officials like Patwaris while neglecting the plight of daily wage workers and terminated employees. She expressed disappointment over the NC’s perceived silence on serious issues like frequent raids, the closure of Jamia Masjid, and the suffering of detained youth.

Mufti also targeted the NC over the issue of reservations, stating that the government’s policies were divisive and alienating to the youth. She called for an end to perceived injustice against open merit students while ensuring the safeguarding of rights for marginalized communities. Comparing the NC’s governance with that of the PDP, Mufti asserted that her party had a better performance record despite having fewer MLAs, emphasizing that the PDP speaks the truth about the realities on the ground.

The PDP president also accused the NC of weakening the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) and suggested that the party’s primary motivation was to secure power. Mufti called for strengthening the PDP to not only voice the concerns of Jammu and Kashmir but also to advocate for oppressed Muslim communities across the country. She maintained that the PDP stands committed to restoring the rights of Jammu and Kashmir through democratic and constitutional means, promising to fight for justice, peace, and dignity for the region’s people.
