SRINAGAR: A man was rescued by river police personnel after he jumped into the Jhelum River near the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Srinagar on Friday.
The Chenab Times has learned that the individual has been identified as Adil Badyari, 30, a resident of Karfali Mohalla, Habba Kadal area of Srinagar. He was pulled out of the river by police officers who were already present in the vicinity, conducting a search operation following an earlier drowning incident reported on February 22, 2026.
Officials stated that the river police team responded immediately upon noticing the incident and successfully rescued Badyari in time. A police party from the Shaheed Gunj Police Station was subsequently involved in shifting the individual to SMHS Hospital for medical evaluation.
Medical authorities reported that Badyari’s condition was stable following the rescue and subsequent assessment at the hospital. The swift action by the river police averted a potential tragedy in the often treacherous currents of the Jhelum River.
The incident underscores the constant vigilance required by law enforcement agencies in Srinagar, particularly along its waterways. The Jhelum River, while a lifeline for the region, can pose significant risks, especially during periods of increased water flow or when individuals are in distress.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of public awareness regarding water safety and the potential dangers associated with the river. While the circumstances leading to Badyari’s jump remain under investigation, the successful rescue highlights the effectiveness of the river police’s rapid response capabilities and their crucial role in maintaining public safety along Srinagar’s prominent river.
