SRINAGAR: Municipal sanitation workers in Soura, Srinagar, discovered a rusted pistol in a garbage dump near a girls’ higher secondary school on Friday, prompting a police investigation.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the discovery was made during a routine waste collection operation in the Anchar area of Soura. Alert sanitation staff identified the object as a firearm and immediately notified the Soura Police Station.
Following the report, a police team was dispatched to the location. Officials took possession of the weapon, which was described as heavily rusted, from the garbage site. The recovery occurred without any reported incident or immediate apprehension.
The area where the pistol was found is situated near a significant educational institution, raising concerns among local residents and authorities about the potential security implications. Police have initiated an inquiry to ascertain the origin of the firearm and the circumstances that led to it being discarded in a public garbage dump.
Further investigation will focus on determining if the pistol is linked to any past or ongoing criminal activities in the region. The recovery underscores the ongoing vigilance required in maintaining public safety, even during routine municipal operations. Authorities have not yet released details regarding any forensic examination of the recovered weapon.
The incident has led to increased scrutiny of waste disposal practices in densely populated areas and near sensitive locations like schools. Local law enforcement agencies are expected to enhance their surveillance and community outreach programs to prevent such discoveries in the future and to gather intelligence on the movement of illegal arms.
This recovery highlights the challenges faced by security forces in maintaining law and order, as discarded weapons can pose a significant threat if they fall into the wrong hands. The police have appealed to the public to report any suspicious findings or activities that could compromise the safety and security of the community.
