Kangra district police have successfully apprehended four individuals and seized approximately 4.04 kilograms of charas in a meticulously planned operation, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the seizures and arrests were made during routine patrolling activities near the Panchrukhi police station on Monday. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the police team intercepted a Maruti Alto K-10 vehicle, leading to the discovery of the contraband.
The operation, which has since expanded into a broader investigation, initially led to the arrest of two men, identified as Gopal, 24, from Khunn village, and Surendra Kumar, 37, from Dagut village, both hailing from the Kullu district. They were subsequently booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, specifically sections 20 and 29, which pertain to the cultivation, manufacture, possession, sale, purchase, and transport of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, and conspiracy and abetment, respectively.
Initial investigations and technical analysis conducted by the police suggested that the two apprehended individuals were part of a larger drug trafficking network. Preliminary findings indicated that Gopal and Surendra Kumar were allegedly tasked with transporting the significant consignment of charas to key operators who are believed to be orchestrating the distribution. These alleged main traffickers have been identified as Kamaljeet Singh, 39, also known as ‘Kaku’, and Sangam Sharma, 26, referred to as ‘Golu’, both residents of Palampur in the Kangra district.
In response to this revelation, the Kangra police swiftly organized multiple covert raids across the district. Within an 18-hour period following the initial arrests on Tuesday, police teams successfully apprehended Kamaljeet Singh and Sangam Sharma. Authorities stated that the operation signifies a significant breakthrough in disrupting drug trafficking routes within the region.
The Superintendent of Police for Kangra district, Ashok Ratan, detailed the sequence of events and emphasized the collaborative nature of the operation. He confirmed the recovery of the charas, which has a substantial street value, and highlighted the police department’s commitment to combating the menace of drug peddling in the state.
Further investigations are reportedly underway to uncover the complete extent of the trafficking network, including the sources from which the charas was obtained and the intended distribution channels. Police are exploring potential links to other individuals and groups involved in the illegal trade, utilizing technical surveillance and interrogation of the apprehended suspects to gather more intelligence. The success of this operation is expected to provide crucial insights into the modus operandi of drug traffickers operating in Himachal Pradesh.
The state of Himachal Pradesh, particularly its hilly terrain and connectivity to various regions, has historically been a transit point and operational area for narcotic substances. Law enforcement agencies have intensified their efforts to curb such activities, with regular nakas, intelligence-led operations, and public awareness campaigns being integral to their strategy. The seizure of over four kilograms of charas underscores the persistent challenges faced by authorities in maintaining law and order and safeguarding communities from the pervasive impact of illegal drugs. The investigation is poised to continue, with officials aiming to dismantle the entire network and bring all involved parties to justice.
The recovery of such a large quantity of contraband is considered a significant success for the Kangra police, reflecting their diligence and effectiveness in intelligence gathering and execution of operations. Authorities have indicated that they will continue their rigorous pursuit of individuals involved in drug trafficking, aiming to ensure the safety and well-being of the state’s residents. The operation also serves as a deterrent to others who might be involved in similar illegal activities.
