SRINAGAR: The Animal Husbandry Department of Jammu and Kashmir has introduced the high-yielding Swiss Saanen goat breed, often referred to as the “Milk Queen,” as part of an initiative to enhance the region’s livestock and dairy production capabilities.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the Saanen breed, originating from Switzerland, is internationally recognized for its exceptional milk-producing capacity and adaptability to organized dairy farming practices. This introduction aims to significantly benefit local farmers by improving milk yields and creating new income streams within the livestock sector.
The initiative is a component of broader governmental efforts to modernize animal husbandry practices across Jammu and Kashmir. The introduction of scientifically managed, high-yield livestock breeds is a key focus of these modernization drives, aiming to elevate the standards of dairy farming in the Union Territory.
The Saanen goat is characterized by its distinctive white coat, a generally calm temperament, and robust dairy performance. Its proven high milk productivity has made it a popular choice for commercial goat farming operations in numerous countries worldwide. The breed’s introduction to Kashmir is expected to leverage these characteristics for local agricultural development.
Selected farmers and established livestock units within the region will receive comprehensive support and guidance from the department. This support will cover essential aspects of breeding, optimal feeding strategies, and overall management practices tailored to the specific needs of the Saanen breed. The goal is to ensure the successful integration and propagation of these improved livestock resources.
The department anticipates that this strategic move will contribute to diversifying the dairy resources available in Kashmir. Furthermore, it is expected to foster the adoption of scientific goat farming techniques among rural households, thereby enhancing their economic resilience and agricultural output.
The introduction of the “Milk Queen” breed has already generated considerable interest among livestock farmers and dairy entrepreneurs in Kashmir. This enthusiasm is particularly notable in areas where goat rearing is a fundamental source of livelihood, indicating a strong potential for the initiative’s success and broader adoption.
