A Frontier Airlines flight aborted its takeoff at Denver International Airport on Friday night after striking an individual who was on the runway. The incident, which occurred around 10:15 p.m. local time on runway 17L, led to an engine fire and smoke in the aircraft cabin, prompting an immediate evacuation of the plane.
According to air traffic control recordings and aviation sources, the pilot of Frontier Flight 4345 reported the collision to the tower, stating, “Tower, Frontier 4345, we’re stopping on the runway. Uh, we just hit somebody… we have an engine fire.” The aircraft was carrying 231 passengers and crew members at the time of the incident.
Following the impact, the flight crew confirmed the presence of an unauthorized individual on the runway. The pilot informed the tower, “We have 231 souls on board… There was an individual walking across the runway.” As smoke began to fill the cabin, the crew made the decision to evacuate all passengers and crew onto the runway via emergency slides.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the engine fire. Passengers were evaluated as a standard procedure and subsequently bused back to the terminal. While reports indicated that at least one passenger sustained a minor injury during the evacuation, no other serious injuries were immediately reported among those on board.
The incident is under investigation by aviation authorities. The Denver International Airport has a history of runway safety concerns, with previous incidents involving vehicles and personnel on active runways. In 2007, a Frontier Airlines jet came within 50 feet of a smaller charter plane that had inadvertently entered the runway. In 2026, a subcontractor working on the runway was killed after being struck by a runway broom, and in 2024, two separate incidents involved employees being hit by trucks on the airport grounds.
