Uttar Pradesh Constable Dismissed Over Alleged IPL Betting Racket Links

LUCKNOW: A constable serving in Uttar Pradesh has been dismissed from service following an inquiry into his alleged links with an Indian Premier League (IPL) betting racket. The constable, whose name has not been officially disclosed, is reportedly absconding.

The dismissal follows a thorough departmental investigation that reportedly uncovered evidence suggesting the constable’s involvement in facilitating or aiding an IPL betting operation. Sources within the police department indicated that the constable may have been using his position to provide protection or insider information to individuals involved in illegal betting activities.

This action comes amidst a broader crackdown on illegal betting networks that often surge during major cricket tournaments like the IPL. Recent reports from various districts in Uttar Pradesh, including Kanpur and Jhansi, have detailed the busting of similar betting rackets, leading to multiple arrests and seizures of substantial amounts of cash and assets. In one instance in Kanpur on April 22, police arrested five individuals and seized over Rs 3.91 crore in cash as part of a crackdown on an IPL betting racket operating through an illegal website and mobile app. Another raid in Kanpur on May 5 led to the arrest of five people and the seizure of an SUV, Rs 1 lakh in cash, and electronic devices used for betting operations.

The police department has been increasingly vigilant against personnel found to be involved in corrupt practices or illegal activities. In a separate case in Agra on October 26, 2025, seven Uttar Pradesh police personnel were suspended for negligence after a video emerged showing them purportedly releasing detained gamblers under public pressure. These actions underscore a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of corruption or dereliction of duty within the force.

The current case involving the dismissed constable highlights the persistent challenge law enforcement faces in combating sophisticated betting syndicates that often operate across state borders and leverage technology. The investigation into the constable’s alleged links is part of a wider effort to dismantle these networks and ensure the integrity of law enforcement agencies.

While the specific details of the constable’s alleged involvement remain under investigation, the swift action taken by the authorities demonstrates a commitment to maintaining discipline and upholding the law. The absconding status of the constable suggests that further developments in the case are anticipated as authorities continue their efforts to locate him and gather more evidence.

The IPL betting landscape has been a focus for law enforcement agencies across India. In May 2026, the Uttarakhand STF and Dehradun Police reportedly busted an international online betting syndicate, arresting five individuals allegedly involved in facilitating bets on IPL matches, with suspected links to individuals in Dubai. Similarly, in August 2021, a Delhi Police constable was dismissed for alleged involvement in an organised cricket betting operation. More recently, on May 9, 2026, Jhansi Police uncovered an online cricket betting racket operating from a luxury apartment, seizing assets worth nearly ₹1.72 crore and arresting two women, while examining alleged links to a dismissed constable.
