Jammu and Kashmir to See Second Round of Limestone Block Auctions on May 12

The Union Ministry of Mines is set to launch the second phase of limestone block auctions in Jammu and Kashmir on May 12, 2026. The initiative, to be held in Srinagar, aims to further leverage the Union Territory’s mineral wealth for industrial and economic development.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, this second tranche follows a successful initial auction round and is designed to enhance the region’s contribution to national industrial targets. The move is part of a broader strategy to boost the economy through the exploration and exploitation of natural resources.

A total of 12 limestone blocks will be offered in this auction. These blocks are situated across the districts of Anantnag, Rajouri, and Poonch. The offerings include both newly identified deposits and blocks that are being re-auctioned after an initial attempt did not result in a successful bid.

Geological assessments have categorized these blocks under the G3 and G4 exploration stages. These stages indicate early-to-intermediate exploration phases, suggesting significant potential for industrial-grade limestone reserves based on preliminary findings.

The auction process will be conducted electronically, utilizing a transparent e-auction system. This digital platform is established under the purview of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, and the Mineral (Auction) Rules, 2015, to ensure fair and competitive bidding among interested parties.

The official launch event in Srinagar is expected to be attended by key figures from both the Ministry of Mines and the Jammu and Kashmir administration. Senior officials, including Piyush Goyal and Ashwani Kumar, are slated to participate in the proceedings.

The identified limestone reserves are considered vital for several key industrial sectors, notably cement manufacturing, construction, and infrastructure development. Authorities anticipate that the successful auctioning of these blocks will stimulate industrial activity and create employment opportunities within the Union Territory.

The Ministry of Mines has emphasized that this initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting scientific and sustainable mining practices. The strategy is expected to not only enhance revenue generation for the region but also foster inclusive economic growth throughout Jammu and Kashmir.
