NEW DELHI, May 12: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to share the prevailing economic condition of the country, questioning the stringent austerity measures he has called upon citizens to adopt.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Kejriwal, addressing a press conference, remarked that while the nation has navigated past crises, including wars, no previous Prime Minister had recommended seven specific, stringent steps for people to follow, as articulated by Prime Minister Modi. He suggested that the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran might be a reason for these directives, but also posited that other factors could be contributing to the nation’s faltering economy.
The former Delhi Chief Minister specifically queried why the onus of sacrifice appeared to fall primarily on the middle class. He raised concerns that the austerity appeals did not seem to extend to the Prime Minister himself, government ministers, senior officials, or the country’s wealthiest individuals, suggesting a broader scope for sacrifice was needed.
Prime Minister Modi had recently encouraged citizens to curtail non-essential expenditures, including limiting purchases of gold, reducing foreign travel, and conserving petroleum consumption, among other suggestions. These appeals have drawn criticism from opposition parties, who have interpreted them as indicators of economic mismanagement and policy failure.
