New Delhi: In a significant move to promote fuel conservation and austerity, the Delhi government has announced that its employees will observe a two-day work-from-home (WFH) schedule each week. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal to citizens and government bodies to reduce fuel consumption and embrace cost-saving measures amidst prevailing global energy concerns.

Austerity Measures Expand to Government Offices

The decision, announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is part of a broader strategy to curb unnecessary expenditure and promote sustainable practices within the administration. Beyond the WFH mandate, the government is implementing several other measures, including a reduction in the use of official vehicles and an increased reliance on public transportation.

Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that the Chief Minister herself, along with her cabinet colleagues and other public representatives, will also adhere to these restrictions. The official petrol and diesel quota for government vehicles will be reduced by 20 percent. Furthermore, ministers and senior officials are being encouraged to utilize the Delhi Metro on Mondays, designating it as “Metro Monday.”

Broader Impact and Public Appeal

The Delhi government is also planning to issue advisories to private companies, encouraging them to adopt similar work-from-home arrangements and fuel-saving practices. This outreach aims to extend the impact of the austerity drive beyond the government sector and foster a collective responsibility towards resource conservation across the national capital.

In addition to the WFH policy, staggered office timings are being introduced to mitigate peak-hour traffic congestion and further reduce fuel consumption. Government offices will now operate from 10:30 am to 7:00 pm, while Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) offices will function from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. The Delhi government has also declared a moratorium on the purchase of new vehicles for the next six months.

The Chief Minister has appealed to the residents of Delhi to actively participate in these conservation efforts by observing a “No Vehicle Day” each week and making greater use of public transport. These measures come in the wake of increasing global fuel prices and geopolitical tensions, which have raised concerns about energy security.

Context of National Austerity Drive

Prime Minister Modi’s call for austerity has resonated across several states, with various BJP-ruled governments initiating similar cost-cutting measures. These include reducing the size of official convoys, limiting official travel, and promoting virtual meetings. The revival of COVID-era practices like remote work and online conferences is seen as a key strategy to conserve fuel and foreign exchange reserves. The Prime Minister had recently urged citizens to reduce fuel and gold consumption, and to postpone non-essential foreign travel, emphasizing the national interest amid global economic uncertainties.
