Jammu and Kashmir to Host IPL-Style College, Inter-District Cricket Tournament

The Jammu and Kashmir administration is planning to introduce an Indian Premier League (IPL)-style cricket tournament for college and inter-district level players across the Union Territory within the next 12 to 14 months. The initiative aims to boost sports promotion and provide a structured platform for the region’s youth.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the announcement was made by Jammu and Kashmir Sports Minister Satish Sharma during a recent function. He stated that discussions have already been held with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the implementation of this tournament.

Sharma expressed the government’s commitment to enhancing the sports landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting that the proposed tournament is part of a broader strategy to engage young individuals in sporting activities. He mentioned that the government is looking to host this major cricketing event within the next year to 14 months, providing a professional setting for aspiring cricketers.

Beyond cricket, the Sports Minister emphasized the administration’s focus on diversifying sporting opportunities. This includes promoting winter sports, water sports, and downhill mountain biking to cater to a wider range of athletic interests and talents present in the Union Territory. The goal is to create a comprehensive sports ecosystem that supports athletes across various disciplines.

Furthermore, Sharma detailed plans to strengthen existing sports infrastructure and support systems. He indicated that the government is actively supporting ‘Khelo India’ centres and is committed to enhancing facilities and youth programs. The minister projected significant positive changes in the sports sector within the next four years, driven by these development initiatives.

Addressing concerns about the quality of ongoing sports infrastructure projects, the minister issued a stern directive to contractors. He underscored the importance of maintaining high-quality standards in construction and development work, stating that complaints regarding subpar work at certain locations had been received. Sharma urged contractors to prioritize quality and integrity, emphasizing that compromising on standards would be detrimental to the future of the region’s aspiring athletes.

The minister also highlighted the crucial role of sports in societal well-being. He reiterated that promoting sports is an essential strategy to steer the youth away from drug abuse and other detrimental social issues, fostering a healthier and more constructive lifestyle among the younger generation.
