The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted search operations across multiple locations on Saturday in connection with the murder of Chandrakant Rath, an aide to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The search operations commenced late Friday night and continued into the early hours of Saturday, according to officials.
CBI Takes Over Murder Investigation
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the CBI has assumed control of the investigation into Rath’s murder. This handover follows a request made by the West Bengal government to the central agency. To expedite the probe, the CBI has established a seven-member special investigation team. This team is headed by a Deputy Inspector General from the Special Crime unit in Delhi and comprises experienced investigators drawn from various departments within the agency. Officials stated that the special team will report directly to the Joint Director in Kolkata.
Background of the Murder
Chandrakant Rath, who served as the executive assistant to Suvendu Adhikari, was fatally shot on May 6 in Madhyamgram. The incident occurred on a public road in the Doharia area of Madhyamgram, two days after the results of the West Bengal Assembly polls were announced. The state police had previously arrested three individuals in connection with the case. Two of the accused, Mayank Raj Mishra and Vicky Maurya, were apprehended in Buxar, Bihar. The third accused, Raj Singh, was detained in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday.
Investigators believe that at least eight individuals were involved in the conspiracy and execution of the murder. Preliminary findings suggest that the perpetrators conducted extensive reconnaissance of Rath’s movements and routines before carrying out the attack. The motive behind the killing remains under investigation as the CBI deepens its inquiry.
The murder of Chandrakant Rath has added to the political discourse in West Bengal, a state that recently concluded a highly contested assembly election. The involvement of the CBI in the investigation underscores the seriousness with which the case is being treated, aiming to bring all perpetrators to justice.
The focus of the ongoing CBI investigation includes establishing a clear chain of events leading up to the murder, identifying all individuals involved in the conspiracy, and determining the motive behind the targeted killing. The agency is expected to scrutinize evidence gathered by the state police and collect further leads through its nationwide search operations.
The Madhyamgram area, where the incident took place, has seen increased security presence following the murder. Local residents have expressed concerns about the safety and security in the region. The outcome of the CBI investigation is anticipated to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding Rath’s death and the broader implications for political activities in the state.
Further updates are expected as the CBI continues its investigation and potentially makes further arrests. The agency’s systematic approach aims to ensure that all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined, from the planning stages to the execution of the crime.
