A 25-year-old woman in Delhi died after allegedly falling from a building, with her family alleging that her in-laws subjected her to continuous pressure for additional dowry, including demands for a Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle. The incident occurred on May 18 in Dasghara village, Inderpuri, west Delhi.
Distress Calls Preceded Fatal Fall
According to her family, the woman made desperate calls to her sister just minutes before she allegedly fell from the fourth floor of a building. During these calls, she pleaded for rescue and urged her family to look after her six-month-old son.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the woman’s brother recounted her words to the media: “She kept pleading to take her away from there. She said if something happens to her, take care of her child.”
Approximately an hour after these distressing calls, the family received a call from the woman’s brother-in-law, informing them of her alleged fall from the terrace. Relatives arrived at a west Delhi hospital only to find that she had already been pronounced dead.
Allegations of Escalating Dowry Demands
The deceased woman’s family claims that harassment over dowry began within months of her marriage. They stated that at the time of the wedding, they had provided cash, a motorcycle, a gold ring, a television, and other household items. However, the demands from the in-laws reportedly escalated over time, with requests for a Royal Enfield Bullet, an air conditioner, a refrigerator, and other expensive items.
The family alleges that this pressure and physical abuse continued for the past three years. The woman’s brother mentioned, “We are farmers. My father had already taken loans for the marriage, but we kept assuring them we would do whatever we could.”
The woman, who hailed from a farming family in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, was one of five siblings. Tensions reportedly intensified following the marriage of one of her brothers-in-law on April 25, with the family claiming that comparisons were drawn regarding the dowry exchanged in both weddings.
The family asserted that they had intervened on multiple occasions over the last three years and had even approached a village panchayat in February 2024 after allegations of physical assault against the woman surfaced. The police have arrested the woman’s husband and brother-in-law in connection with the case, which has been registered as a dowry death.
