AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami has launched a sharp critique against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, holding him responsible for the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, particularly in the wake of a recent youth murder in Tondiarpet, Chennai. Palaniswami accused the Chief Minister of evading his duties as the de facto police minister and adopting an armchair approach to governance.

The Chenab Times has learned that Palaniswami’s accusations stem from a series of concerns he raised regarding the state’s public safety, including escalating crime rates, the pervasive issue of drug trafficking, and perceived delays in implementing crucial women’s safety initiatives, such as the proposed ‘Singappen’ force.

Addressing reporters in Chennai, Palaniswami questioned the efficacy of the current administration’s approach to policing and crime prevention. He specifically referenced the murder of a youth in Tondiarpet, a locality within Chennai, alleging that such incidents are becoming more frequent and symptomatic of a broader collapse in law and order. The opposition leader asserted that the Chief Minister, who also holds the portfolio for police, is failing to provide adequate security and justice to the citizens.

Palaniswami’s critique extended to the Chief Minister’s public persona, with the AIADMK leader suggesting that Stalin acts more like a “reel hero” than a proactive administrator. This remark implied a perception that the Chief Minister is more concerned with image than with tangible governance and public welfare. The veteran politician underscored the urgency of addressing drug-related crimes, which he believes are destabilizing communities and impacting youth across Tamil Nadu.

Further elaborating on the governance deficit, Palaniswami pointed to the delayed implementation of measures aimed at enhancing women’s safety. The ‘Singappen’ force, envisioned as a dedicated unit to combat crimes against women, has been a significant talking point, and its delayed operationalization, according to Palaniswami, highlights the government’s lack of urgency in tackling critical public safety issues. He argued that these delays contribute to a climate of insecurity, especially for vulnerable sections of the population.

The leader of the opposition also stated that the prevailing law and order situation reflects poorly on the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government’s commitment to its electoral promises. Palaniswami recalled the DMK’s campaign pledges and contrasted them with the current ground realities, suggesting a significant gap between promises and performance. He stressed that the responsibility for maintaining peace and order lies directly with the Chief Minister, and the current state of affairs indicates a failure to uphold this fundamental duty.

Palaniswami’s remarks come at a time when political discourse in Tamil Nadu is often dominated by issues of governance and public service delivery. The opposition AIADMK has been actively seeking to highlight perceived shortcomings of the ruling DMK government, using incidents like the Tondiarpet murder to galvanize public opinion and pressure the administration. The current government, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, has consistently maintained its focus on developmental initiatives and ensuring public welfare, while also addressing law and order concerns through various policy interventions and administrative actions.

The Chief Minister’s office has, in the past, responded to criticism regarding law and order by emphasizing the steps taken to strengthen police infrastructure, improve investigative capabilities, and enhance community policing. The government has also highlighted its efforts in tackling drug menace and ensuring swift justice in criminal cases, often attributing any perceived lapses to the complexities of urban crime and the need for sustained societal effort. However, Palaniswami’s latest broadside signifies a renewed and intensified challenge to the DMK government’s performance on the critical front of public safety.
