At least 21 individuals perished and over 40 were rescued following a significant fire incident at a hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area on Wednesday morning. The death toll is anticipated to rise as rescue and identification efforts continue.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the blaze, believed to have originated around 8:50 am, started in the basement restaurant of the Flourish Stay hotel, located in a multi-storey building. The fire subsequently spread to an adjacent establishment, Micasa Inn. Early reports suggest a majority of the deceased may be foreign nationals, with several victims identified as being from Central Asian and African countries.
Emergency services responded promptly, deploying multiple fire units, including water tenders and bowsers, to the densely populated locality. The area is known to be frequented by students and young professionals.
Rescue operations were initiated to evacuate occupants trapped within the building. More than 40 people were successfully brought to safety from the affected premises.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the tragic incident. He announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each person deceased. Additionally, Rs 50,000 will be provided to those who sustained injuries in the fire.
The Prime Minister’s Office conveyed that authorities are extending all possible assistance to those impacted by the unfortunate event, describing the incident as tragic and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
