New Delhi: Three Indian seafarers who were reported missing following a maritime incident off the coast of Oman have been confirmed dead, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced. The bodies of the seafarers, who were onboard the Palau-flagged commercial vessel MT Settebello, were located and identified.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the minister expressed deep regret over the tragic loss, describing it as a profound loss to the maritime community. He affirmed that the government stands with the bereaved families during this difficult time and is committed to providing support to the next of kin.
Incident Details and Government Response
The MT Settebello was struck by a US military strike in the Gulf of Oman. The vessel was reportedly attempting to transport oil from Iran, a violation of an ongoing US blockade of Iranian ports, according to the US Central Command. The US forces stated that they disabled the vessel after the crew failed to comply with directions. The strike targeted the ship’s engine room.
India had previously summoned the US charge d’affaires to register a strong protest against the attack. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned the incident, noting that out of the 24 Indian crew members onboard, 21 had been rescued, with three initially reported missing.
Following the confirmation of the deaths, Minister Sonowal directed officials to expedite the repatriation of the rescued crew members and the swift return of the mortal remains of the deceased for their final rites. The incident occurred amidst heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, with both nations engaging in retaliatory actions.
