Kyiv, Ukraine – Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine, hitting the capital Kyiv with significant destruction to civilian infrastructure and causing a fire at the historic Dormition Cathedral within the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastic complex. The widespread assault, which also targeted other Ukrainian cities, resulted in multiple casualties and extensive damage.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the attack on Kyiv occurred in the early hours of Monday, June 15, 2026. Explosions were heard across the capital as air defense systems engaged numerous aerial targets. Official reports indicate that four people were killed and at least 23 were injured in Kyiv, including a child.
The Dormition Cathedral, an 11th-century landmark and a spiritual heart of Ukrainian Orthodoxy located within the UNESCO-listed Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, sustained damage to its roof, which caught fire. Metropolitan Epiphanius, head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, condemned the strike as a grave offense. “Another Russian crime against humanity, against history, against Christianity,” he stated, calling for prayers to protect the shrine.
Ukrainian officials reported that the attack on Kyiv involved a wave of ballistic missiles followed by Shahed drones. Significant destruction to civilian infrastructure was noted, with several residential buildings hit. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, at least five civilian sites were struck within a short period, including a 25-story apartment building. A market and a grocery store also caught fire. The Obolonskyi district saw a nine-story residential building sustain a direct hit.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, accused Russia of deliberately targeting residential areas. “This is their deliberate decision,” he said, referring to the strikes on civilian buildings. The assault also affected the capital’s power infrastructure, leaving approximately 140,000 subscribers without electricity due to damage to power transmission lines.
Beyond Kyiv, the city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine also came under attack. Five State Emergency Service rescuers were killed and at least five others were wounded in what appeared to be a “double-tap” strike, where a second attack occurred while first responders were extinguishing a fire from an initial strike. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed the fatalities among the rescuers.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have carried out strikes with long-range precision weapons and drones targeting military industrial facilities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, as well as military conscription offices and air bases. The ministry stated that the objectives of the strikes were fulfilled and all designated facilities were hit. However, Ukrainian authorities reported that air defenses intercepted or electronically suppressed a significant number of aerial targets, including missiles and drones.
The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a monastic complex and a site of immense historical and religious significance, suffered substantial damage. Fires broke out within the sprawling complex, affecting the Dormition Cathedral. Reports from the scene showed flames engulfing the roof of the cathedral. The attack also impacted cultural heritage sites, with reports of costumes from landmark Ukrainian films being destroyed at the Dovzhenko Film Studio.
The broader consequences of the attack included damage to homes and vehicles across the Kyiv region, with reports of residential buildings, private houses, and warehouse facilities being affected in districts such as Brovary, Vyshhorod, Fastiv, Bucha, and Boryspil. In the Fastiv district, a private house caught fire, and a vehicle was damaged. In the Brovary district, a multi-story residential building, vehicles, and warehouse facilities sustained damage.
The Orthodox Church of Ukraine condemned the attack on the cathedral, with Metropolitan Epiphanius I labeling it a “brutal assault on our people and our heritage” and “a crime against humanity, against history, and against Christianity.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously warned of intensified Russian strikes following Ukrainian operations targeting Russian infrastructure.
The scale of the aerial bombardment, involving numerous missiles and drones, underscores the ongoing intensity of the conflict. While Russia claimed its targets were military, the damage to civilian areas and religious sites points to a devastating impact on Ukraine’s population and cultural heritage.
