SRINAGAR: Two individuals lost their lives and eleven others, including four tourists, sustained injuries in two separate road accidents that occurred in Kashmir on Wednesday, officials reported.
The Chenab Times has learned that one of the incidents involved a vehicle skidding off the Aru-Pahalgam road in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, plunging into a deep gorge. The accident resulted in the immediate death of two people and injuries to six others, who were subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
In response to the tragedy, the Chief Minister’s office issued a statement on X expressing deep sorrow over the accident. The statement conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for their strength during this difficult period. The Chief Minister also directed authorities to ensure the provision of the best possible medical care for the injured and to extend all necessary assistance to the affected families.
In a separate incident reported earlier, a vehicle carrying four tourists and a local driver overturned in Tangmarg, located in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir. Tangmarg serves as a primary market and the gateway to the popular ski resort of Gulmarg. The occupants of the vehicle sustained injuries and were promptly taken to a hospital, where their conditions are reported to be stable.
Road accidents in the region, particularly those involving vehicles navigating challenging terrain, have been a persistent concern. Authorities frequently issue advisories and implement measures to enhance road safety, especially during peak tourist seasons. The geography of Kashmir, with its winding mountain roads and varying weather conditions, necessitates heightened caution from drivers and commuters alike.
The incidents underscore the ongoing challenges related to road safety infrastructure and enforcement in the Union Territory. Officials have previously highlighted the importance of adherence to traffic regulations, proper vehicle maintenance, and responsible driving practices to mitigate the risk of such accidents. The local administration remains engaged in efforts to improve road conditions and awareness campaigns aimed at reducing fatalities and injuries on the roads.
The injured tourists are receiving ongoing medical care, and efforts are underway to facilitate their well-being and onward travel arrangements as appropriate. The local authorities are coordinating with various agencies to provide support to all those affected by these unfortunate events.
