Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi marked a significant occasion with its 14th Convocation held at its North Campus in Kamand, Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh. This year’s ceremony set a new record, conferring degrees upon the largest-ever graduating class of Bachelor of Technology students in the institute’s history.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that a total of 643 students received their degrees. This cohort comprised 321 undergraduate students, 259 postgraduate students, and 63 PhD scholars, underscoring the institute’s expanding academic reach across multiple disciplines. The graduation of 321 B.Tech students represents a substantial increase and highlights the growing demand for engineering talent.
The convocation ceremony was graced by distinguished personalities. Mr. B.K. Goenka, Founder of Welspun World, presided over the event as the Chief Guest. Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, and Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, attended as Guests of Honour, signifying the collaborative spirit within the IIT system. Lieutenant General Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon (Retd), Chairman of the Board of Governors, IIT Mandi, presided over the proceedings.
Addressing the graduating students, Chief Guest B.K. Goenka urged them to embrace qualities of “joy, originality, and courage” in navigating an era characterized by rapid technological advancements and the pervasive influence of artificial intelligence. He emphasized the critical importance of adaptability and resilience for future leaders aspiring to make a mark in their respective fields.
Academic Excellence and Recognition
The ceremony also served as a platform to celebrate and acknowledge outstanding academic achievements. Vayun Goel was a standout recipient, earning both the President of India Gold Medal and the Institute Gold Medal in Computer Science and Engineering, positioning him as one of the top performers of the graduating batch.
Further accolades were bestowed upon several students for their exceptional performance. The Director’s Gold Medal was presented to Sukhvansh Jain. The Bioengineering Gold Medal was awarded to Sneha Chandna, and Khushi Rewar received the Civil Engineering Gold Medal. Bipanjit Singh was honored with the Data Science and Engineering Gold Medal, while Akshar Agrawal received the Electrical Engineering Gold Medal. Aridaman Singh Chauhan was recognized with the Engineering Physics Gold Medal, and Pranjal Vats received the Mechanical Engineering Gold Medal.
In the postgraduate category, gold medals were presented to scholars across a diverse range of disciplines. Recipients were recognized in fields such as Development Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Structural Engineering, and various Management-related programs. These awards reflect the breadth of advanced studies undertaken at IIT Mandi.
In addition to subject-specific medals, the convocation also saw the presentation of special awards. These included the Institute Innovation Silver Medal, NBCC Awards, and various memorial medals. These recognitions were instituted to acknowledge and encourage innovation, leadership qualities, and interdisciplinary excellence among the students, fostering a holistic approach to academic and professional development within the institute’s community.
