SRINAGAR: The Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) has initiated a broad consultation process to gauge the sentiment of its grassroots workers regarding Member of Parliament from Baramulla, Engineer Rashid’s, expressed intention to resign from the Lok Sabha.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the AIP’s Committee on Political Affairs, after extensive deliberations, resolved to engage party office-bearers and cadres across all 18 Assembly segments of the Baramulla parliamentary constituency. This exercise aims to gather feedback on whether Engineer Rashid should continue in his parliamentary role.
According to AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi, the consultative process will involve party functionaries at various levels discussing the matter. The party may also conduct a secret ballot among its cadres to allow for free and unpressured expression of views, he stated. Office-bearers at the panchayat and block levels are also tasked with engaging with the general public and different societal sections to collect feedback. The collective opinion derived from this consultation is intended to reflect the sentiments of the electorate and the party’s base.
Mr. Un Nabi emphasized that the primary objective of these consultations is to ensure that any decision concerning Engineer Rashid’s future as an MP is guided by the aspirations of the people who elected him and the party. The outcome of these discussions and any potential voting will be formally communicated to Engineer Rashid, facilitating an informed decision on his part.
The AIP reiterated its commitment to internal democracy and public accountability, asserting that significant political decisions ought to be informed by the collective wisdom of the party’s cadre and the populace it serves. The proposed consultation process is anticipated to play a pivotal role in shaping the future course of action regarding Engineer Rashid’s parliamentary position, with the party underscoring the centrality of worker and electorate voices in the final determination.
Engineer Rashid secured a significant mandate in the Lok Sabha elections, and his potential resignation has prompted this extensive internal review by the AIP. The party leadership believes that seeking direct input from the ground level is crucial for maintaining transparency and democratic principles in its political decision-making. This initiative highlights the AIP’s approach to governance and representation, placing emphasis on the will of the people who empower them.
The spokesperson added that the party leadership is committed to a thorough and inclusive process. The feedback gathered will be compiled and presented to Engineer Rashid, who will then be expected to consider the collective opinion of the party cadre and the constituents he represents. This approach aims to foster trust and ensure that the Member of Parliament remains aligned with the expectations and wishes of his electorate.
The exercise is designed to provide Engineer Rashid with a clear understanding of the prevailing mood and opinion within his constituency and the party structure. The AIP views this consultative phase as an essential step in navigating a sensitive political decision, ensuring that the final resolution is both democratic and representative of the broad will of the people. The party expects this process to conclude in a manner that uphns the principles of accountability and public mandate.
