SRINAGAR: A 50-year-old man, critically injured in a road accident in the Tangmarg area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, has died from his injuries, marking the first fatality related to the incident.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Ghulam Mohiuddin Ganai, a resident of Danas village in Beerwah, Budgam, was among seven occupants traveling in a Tavera vehicle when it skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge near Baba Reshi Morh on June 20. The accident occurred on the Baba Reshi road, a route frequently used by pilgrims and tourists in the region.
Following the accident, all injured individuals were initially transported to Sub-District Hospital Tangmarg. From there, they were referred to higher medical facilities to receive specialized treatment for their injuries. Ganai’s condition reportedly deteriorated over the subsequent days, leading to his death.
The Tavera vehicle, registered under the number JK02AG-3981, was stated by officials to have veered off the mountainous terrain before falling into the gorge. Road conditions in hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir can often be challenging, particularly during adverse weather or at night, contributing to such accidents. The local administration typically reviews such incidents to assess road safety measures and identify potential improvements.
Accidents involving vehicles plunging into gorges are not uncommon in the mountainous terrains of Jammu and Kashmir, often attributed to factors such as sharp turns, poor road conditions, speeding, or driver fatigue. Authorities often issue advisories urging caution for drivers traversing these routes. The investigation into the specifics of this particular accident is expected to determine the precise cause of the vehicle skidding off the road.
Ghulam Mohiuddin Ganai is survived by his family, and his death highlights the dangers posed by road accidents in challenging terrains. The local police are likely to have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal crash. The incident serves as a stark reminder for increased vigilance and adherence to traffic regulations while traveling in the valley’s scenic but often perilous roadways.
