Digital India Initiative Redefines Governance, Empowers Citizens: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday marked the 11th anniversary of the Digital India initiative, stating that it has profoundly redefined governance, empowered citizens, and accelerated development across all facets of life, thereby establishing a new global identity for India.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Prime Minister articulated his views in a post on X, highlighting how the initiative has transformed the nation.

“Today, we mark 11 years since the Digital India initiative was launched. This initiative has redefined governance, empowered citizens and accelerated all-round development. It has touched every aspect of life,” the Prime Minister stated.

He elaborated on the impact of Digital India, noting its role in facilitating seamless digital payments and ensuring transparent direct benefit transfers to beneficiaries. The Prime Minister also pointed to the expanding digital public infrastructure as a key enabler of ‘Ease of Living’ for citizens.

According to the Prime Minister, Digital India has successfully extended the wave of innovation to all parts of the country, with a significant focus on villages and tier-2 and tier-3 cities. He emphasized that young entrepreneurs, startups, and innovators from across India are actively developing solutions to address pressing global challenges.

The initiative has been instrumental in strengthening sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, commerce, and public service delivery, leading to more transparent, efficient, and accessible governance. Prime Minister Modi also noted India’s rapid advancements in emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and quantum computing, attributing this progress to the nation’s strides in the digital realm.

“This too will open new avenues for growth and opportunity. Our focus will remain on creating a future where technology serves humanity, empowers every citizen and drives sustainable development,” he added.

The Prime Minister further asserted that Digital India serves as the robust foundation for a developed and self-reliant India. Over the past eleven years, it has played a critical role in empowering the poor and deprived sections of society, while simultaneously making the lives of citizens more convenient.

“From the expansion of optical fibre networks to digital transactions, the unprecedented success of this campaign has drawn the attention of the entire world towards India. When over a billion people embrace technology, the impact is transformative!” Prime Minister Modi remarked.

Officials observed that prior to the launch of the Digital India program in 2015, public services were often associated with lengthy queues, extensive paperwork, and limited connectivity. The initiative has effectively bridged this digital divide by expanding internet access and bringing a multitude of services online.

The program has also fostered the democratization of digital technologies by ensuring affordable internet access and digital inclusivity on a population scale. Over the last decade, Digital India has become the cornerstone of India’s digital economy and its Digital Public Infrastructure.

This transformation is exemplified by India’s leadership in global real-time digital payments, with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) now handling approximately 49 percent of worldwide transaction volume, a testament to the widespread adoption and impact of the Digital India initiative.
