The Uttar Pradesh Police have apprehended Vikramjit Singh, a prominent figure wanted in connection with the 2023 Ajnala police station clash and an activist associated with the ‘Waris Punjab De’ group, as he allegedly attempted to enter India illegally from Nepal. A US citizen of Punjab origin, identified as Manveer Singh, was also taken into custody during the operation.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that three other individuals were arrested for their alleged involvement in facilitating the illegal entry of Vikramjit Singh and Manveer Singh into India. The Uttar Pradesh Police subsequently shared the details of the arrests with the Amritsar Rural Police.
Vikramjit Singh had been evading law enforcement for over two years. During this period, he reportedly moved between various locations within India, including Mumbai, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Udhampur, before relocating to Kathmandu approximately a year ago. His attempt to re-enter India without proper documentation led to his detention.
Confirming the detentions, Uttar Pradesh Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Srivastava stated that both individuals were apprehended for attempting to cross the border without possessing valid travel documents. Srivastava elaborated that Manveer Singh, the US citizen, was intercepted during routine checks as he attempted to enter India without a visa, and neither he nor Vikramjit Singh possessed the requisite legal authorisation for entry.
Vikramjit Singh was part of a group of supporters accompanying Amritpal Singh, the former chief of ‘Waris Punjab De’ and currently the Member of Parliament for Khadoor Sahib, during a protest march. This march, which occurred in February 2023, was directed at the Ajnala police station and was organised with the objective of securing the release of Amritpal Singh’s associate, Lovepreet Singh, who had been arrested in relation to an attempt-to-murder case.
An official from the Amritsar Rural Police confirmed that an active arrest warrant was outstanding against Vikramjit Singh. A police contingent has since travelled to Uttar Pradesh to take custody of Vikramjit Singh following the completion of necessary legal formalities. It was also reported that Vikramjit Singh was utilising a fake Aadhaar card for identification purposes during his travels.
The Uttar Pradesh Police have initiated legal proceedings against the apprehended individuals, registering a case under the provisions of the Foreigners Act and other pertinent legislation. The investigation aims to ascertain the full extent of the network involved in facilitating illegal entries and the activities undertaken by the accused.
