SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has pledged comprehensive support to bolster the region’s globally renowned cricket bat manufacturing industry, addressing critical issues ranging from raw material supply to infrastructure and ease of doing business.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced these assurances during a visit to the Hallamulla Sangam Industrial Estate in Anantnag, where he engaged with members of the Cricket Bat Manufacturers Association. He emphasized the importance of preserving traditional industries alongside efforts to attract new investments.
Acknowledging the cricket bat sector as a significant traditional strength of Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister highlighted its reliance on locally sourced willow, skilled craftsmanship, and established markets both domestically and internationally. Addressing concerns about the availability of willow wood, Abdullah stated that the administration would actively promote scientific and systematic replantation of willow trees to ensure a sustainable supply of raw material for manufacturers. Furthermore, authorities would investigate improved willow varieties and enhance monitoring mechanisms to prevent the illicit trade of willow clefts.
In a move aimed at improving operational efficiency for bat manufacturers, proposals for upgrading electricity supply to the industrial estate are to be taken up with the Power Development Department. The Chief Minister also assured improvements in medical facilities for the workers, the establishment of a dedicated Fire and Emergency Services unit for the area, and a simplification of procedural requirements that impact the industry’s smooth functioning.
During his visit, Abdullah toured a cricket bat manufacturing unit. He interacted with the workers and artisans, commending their skill and dedication. He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the sector through supportive policies and essential infrastructure development, recognizing the industry’s contribution to the region’s economy and cultural heritage.
