Bengaluru: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and MLA Araga Jnanendra has asserted that the party will legally contest all cases filed against its leaders, vowing not to be intimidated by what he described as a pattern of vendetta politics by the ruling Congress government in Karnataka.
Allegations of Misuse of Police Power
Jnanendra, a former Home Minister of Karnataka, condemned the registration of cases against prominent BJP figures, including MLC C.T. Ravi. He accused the Congress government of weaponizing the police department to target political opponents. Jnanendra stated that an attempt had been made on C.T. Ravi’s life during a previous Belagavi session, and it was natural for Ravi to file a police complaint. However, he alleged that the current government was retaliating by filing continuous cases against him.
Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that Jnanendra made these remarks while speaking to reporters in Shivamogga. He recalled that during the previous Congress administration in the 2016-17 period, rowdy-sheets were reportedly opened against approximately 23,000 BJP and RSS workers. Jnanendra issued a warning that police officers acting under political pressure might face repercussions in the future.
Focus Shifted from Law and Order
Asserting that the BJP would not be intimidated and would fight all cases legally, Jnanendra criticized the Home Department for allegedly focusing on suppressing political opponents while daily crimes go unchecked. He further alleged that the ruling government was neglecting administrative duties, being preoccupied with internal discussions about changing the chief minister and subsequently focusing on cabinet expansion.
Echoing similar sentiments, senior BJP MLA V. Sunil Kumar accused the state government of reducing the Home Department to a mere social media surveillance wing, rather than fulfilling its primary role of maintaining law and order. Kumar pointed out that issues such as drug trafficking, youth crime, and homicides were being left unaddressed, while the department was allegedly preoccupied with monitoring speeches, Facebook posts, and WhatsApp communications.
Political Background of Araga Jnanendra
Araga Jnanendra, a legislator from the Thirthahalli constituency, has a long political career with roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He has served as the Minister of Home Affairs, excluding the Intelligence Wing, in the Karnataka government from August 4, 2021, to May 13, 2023. Prior to this, he served as the Chairman of the Karnataka Housing Board from July 28, 2020, to July 28, 2021. His electoral journey began with contesting MLA elections in 1983 and 1985, which he lost. He won a Jilla Parishatha election in 1986 and served as President of the Krushi Sthayi Samithi. After losing further MLA elections in 1989 and 2009, he secured his first MLA victory in 1994 and was subsequently re-elected in 1999 and 2004. He was again elected as an MLA in 2018 and 2023 from the Tirthahalli constituency. During his tenure as Home Minister, Jnanendra was also involved in discussions regarding digital governance and leveraging technology for law enforcement purposes.
The political landscape in Karnataka has seen increased activism from the opposition parties, with the BJP frequently voicing concerns about the governance and policies of the current Congress administration.
