A 19-year-old student of Delhi University has died after allegedly falling from an upper floor of a mall in Delhi’s Rajouri Garden area. The incident, which occurred near the Mall of Rajouri Garden adjacent to the Pink Line Metro station, was reported to the police on Saturday.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Head Constable Avdesh, during his routine patrolling on August 8, discovered the body of the young woman near the mall. Preliminary observations at the scene suggested that the student had fallen from a considerable height within the mall premises. A police team, comprising Sub-Inspector Prakash Kashyap, along with crime and forensic science laboratory personnel, arrived at the location after receiving the report at the Rajouri Garden police station to conduct a thorough inspection and gather evidence.
During their examination of the site, investigators recovered a handwritten note from the deceased. According to police statements, the note indicated that the student had chosen to end her life voluntarily. The police have stated that their initial investigation at the scene yielded no evidence suggesting foul play in the incident. The body was subsequently taken for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the precise cause of death.
The deceased has been identified as a third-year Bachelor of Arts student at Aryabhatta College, which is affiliated with Delhi University. Sources close to the family revealed that the student had been experiencing depression. This emotional distress was reportedly linked to the death of her mother, which occurred in 2021. The family has provided their statements to the police, cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
In connection with the incident, proceedings have been initiated under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the new criminal code that replaced the Indian Penal Code. Further legal processes are being carried out in accordance with the law. The authorities are continuing to gather information and statements to complete their report on the tragic event. The incident has prompted discussions regarding mental health support for students, particularly those facing personal tragedies and academic pressures.
