A Delhi court has issued a notice to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bhardwaj in connection with a criminal defamation case initiated by Delhi minister Parvesh Verma. The notice mandates Bhardwaj’s appearance before the Rouse Avenue Court on August 18.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Neha Mittal presided over the proceedings on Saturday, during which Verma himself was present in court.
The legal proceedings stem from allegations made by Verma against Bhardwaj, accusing the AAP leader of making false statements intended to damage his and his family’s reputation. Verma’s complaint centers on accusations that Bhardwaj falsely claimed the minister had misused his official position to appoint an associate as a trustee of a private school trust valued at approximately ₹500 crore.
Prior to the issuance of the notice, the court had heard statements from witnesses on behalf of Verma. On August 1, Yashdeep Chaturvedi recorded his testimony. Earlier, on July 25, documentary and electronic evidence, including content stored on a pen drive, was submitted by Verma’s legal team and taken on record by the court. The court had also recorded the statements of two other witnesses, Shakti Singh Sehrawat and Kulbhushan Jain, on July 15, following Verma’s own statement on July 4.
The case highlights the legal recourse available to individuals who believe their reputation has been unlawfully harmed through defamatory statements. Criminal defamation, as pursued in this instance, involves allegations that statements made by the accused are intended to cause harm to the complainant’s reputation, often leading to court proceedings initiated by the aggrieved party.
