The Tamil Nadu government has announced a significant financial commitment towards the upkeep and renovation of its religious heritage. In the Revised Budget Estimates for 2026-2027, an allocation of ₹708 crore has been earmarked for the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department. This substantial funding is set to bolster efforts in heritage conservation and temple infrastructure development across the state.
Ambitious Five-Year Plan for Temple Consecration and Restoration
As part of a comprehensive five-year plan, the government intends to undertake renovation works and perform ‘Thirukudamuzhukku’, the traditional consecration ceremony, at approximately 3,000 temples. This initiative aims to preserve the sanctity and structural integrity of numerous places of worship.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the government will also focus on restoring ancient architectural marvels, with a dedicated budget of ₹418 crore allocated for the restoration and conservation of 213 temples that are over a thousand years old. The plan further includes the restoration of 250 temple tanks and the repair of 75 wooden temple cars, underscoring a broad approach to heritage preservation.
Enhanced Amenities and Administrative Reforms
Beyond structural renovations, the budget emphasizes improving the experience for devotees. Basic amenities such as safe drinking water, restrooms, bathrooms, and accommodation facilities are slated for upgrades at temples that attract a large number of visitors. These improvements are crucial for enhancing the comfort and convenience of pilgrims.
In parallel, the government is addressing administrative aspects of temple management. Notifications have reportedly been issued for the appointment of Trustees to 9,205 temples, with actions underway to finalize these appointments. Structural reforms within the HR&CE Department are also planned, with a focused effort on safeguarding the movable and immovable properties belonging to the temples.
