Srinagar, Aug 11: Anwar Ashai, a prominent former student leader and a significant figure in the political history of Kashmir, passed away on Tuesday morning in Srinagar. His demise marks the end of an era for those associated with student activism and political movements in the region during the latter half of the 20th century.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Ashai breathed his last at approximately 10 a.m. His colleagues and acquaintances confirmed the news and expressed deep sorrow over his passing.
The Namaz-e-Janazah, the Islamic funeral prayer, was scheduled to be offered on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. at his residence located in Rajbagh, Srinagar. The announcement of his death was met with widespread grief among his former associates, who fondly recalled his extensive involvement in Kashmir’s student and political spheres.
Anwar Ashai was the son of the late Ghulam Ahmad Ashai, a respected educationist and a notable figure in the freedom struggle. Ashai himself became actively involved in student activism in Kashmir during the 1960s. This period was characterized by the rise of organised student movements across the Valley, which played a role in shaping the region’s socio-political landscape.
His long association with student politics and subsequent engagement with broader political movements made him a familiar and respected personality among various circles in Kashmir. Colleagues remembered him for his dedication and his role in the student fraternity during a crucial time in the region’s history.
The statement announcing his death included the traditional Islamic phrase, “Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un,” signifying acceptance of God’s will and acknowledging the transient nature of life.
