In a remarkable display of dedication, a lone teacher at Government Primary School, Miani, in Ludhiana, Punjab, has taken on the dual responsibility of classroom instruction and actively recruiting students by visiting their homes. The school, which has operated with a single teacher for several years, currently caters to 37 students across various grades.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the teacher not only manages the curriculum for all age groups but also handles administrative duties and record-keeping single-handedly. A significant challenge she faces is that many of the students come from migrant labourer families, whose parents often prioritize work over ensuring regular school attendance.
Refusing to let these circumstances hinder the children’s education, the teacher has adopted a proactive approach. When students are absent, she personally visits their residences to encourage them and escort them back to school. This commitment extends beyond mere academic instruction, demonstrating a deep investment in each child’s educational journey.
To further incentivize attendance, the teacher leverages the mid-day meal program as a point of attraction. She engages students by describing the day’s menu and discussing different dishes, generating excitement that often persuades them to attend school. This strategy, combined with her personal outreach, proves effective in overcoming parental indifference or busy work schedules.
The demanding nature of managing a school with a single educator is amplified by these extensive outreach efforts. Teachers in such situations must divide their time between teaching multiple grades simultaneously, fulfilling administrative tasks, ensuring the school’s operational efficiency, and diligently tracking student attendance. The efforts of Jasvir Kaur, the teacher in question, highlight the extraordinary measures taken in under-resourced educational settings.
Despite these significant hurdles, Jasvir Kaur has not only kept the Miani school functional but has also made persistent efforts to bring children back into the educational fold. Her philosophy centers on creating a welcoming and engaging school environment that encourages students to return each day, underscoring that her role begins long before attendance is marked.
Her proactive engagement means that instead of solely waiting for students to arrive at the school gates, she is frequently the one initiating contact by visiting their homes. This dedication is crucial for children from families where parents are daily-wage earners and may not have the time or resources to closely monitor their children’s schooling.
Manoj Kumar, the deputy education officer, acknowledged the situation and stated, “I will direct the officers to deploy an associate or any teacher from the village with the help of the panchayat of Maini village.” This statement indicates a potential step towards alleviating the burden on the single teacher and improving the staffing situation at the Government Primary School, Miani.
