Dr JPS Gill, Vice-Chancellor of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, has been formally conferred the honorary rank of Colonel and appointed Colonel Commandant of the National Cadet Corps (NCC). The appointment recognizes his leadership and contributions to the 1 Punjab Remount and Veterinary Squadron.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the ceremonial “Pipping-In” ceremony, an event that merges military tradition with academic accolades, took place at the University Auditorium. The ceremony marked the formal bestowing of the honorary rank upon Dr Gill.
The distinguished honour was conferred by the Chief Guest, Major General Narinder Singh, Sena Medal, who holds the position of Additional Director General of the NCC Directorate for Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh. The event was attended by a gathering of senior military officers, university officials, NCC cadets, and other notable guests, including Brigadier P.S. Cheema, Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, Group Commander of the NCC Group Headquarters.
The proceedings commenced with a mounted guard salute, featuring NCC horses that escorted the dignitaries into the venue, setting a formal and respectful tone for the occasion. A central element of the ceremony was the formal “pipping” of Dr Gill’s new ranks onto his uniform. Major General Narinder Singh then presented Dr Gill with a commemorative folder and a framed certificate. In a gesture of mutual respect and partnership, Dr Gill presented Major General Singh with a memento, symbolizing the strong and ongoing relationship between GADVASU and the NCC.
Under the leadership of Dr Gill, GADVASU has seen significant advancements in its equestrian traditions. NCC cadets from the university have achieved considerable success in national equestrian events. Between 2024 and 2026, these cadets secured a total of four gold, three silver, and four bronze medals at Republic Day equestrian competitions. This performance played a crucial role in the Punjab Directorate topping the overall equestrian medal tally during that period, highlighting the effectiveness of the university’s support and training programs.
Major General Narinder Singh lauded Dr Gill for his unwavering commitment to the NCC and acknowledged the university’s role in fostering the R&V Squadron NCC. He commended the university for integrating the squadron as an essential part of its academic community, providing vital infrastructure, veterinary expertise, and resources for horse management and training. The appointment of Dr Gill was described by Major General Singh as a significant milestone aimed at strengthening institutional ownership and engagement with the NCC.
Expressing his profound gratitude for the honour bestowed upon him, Dr Gill reiterated his dedication to elevating the standing of the NCC at GADVASU. He pledged to lead the NCC unit to further achievements and greater heights. Dr Gill also extended his appreciation to Commanding Officer Col AS Rao for his efforts in inspiring the cadets to maintain high standards of discipline, leadership, and excellence in their service to the nation. The ceremony concluded with the rendition of the NCC Song, followed by the National Anthem, bringing a sense of unity and patriotic fervor to the event.
