Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has announced support for a protest march organised by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha on August 15. The march, set to commence from the protest site and proceed to the Governor House, aims to advocate for the release of Sikh prisoners who have reportedly served extended periods in jail beyond their prescribed sentences.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Dhami highlighted the prolonged incarceration of several Sikh individuals, including Balwant Singh Rajoana, Jagtar Singh Hawara, Jagtar Singh Tara, Paramjit Singh Bheora, Prof Davinderpal Singh Bhullar, and Gurdip Singh Khehra. He noted that these prisoners have spent substantial time behind bars, raising concerns about the government’s approach to their cases.
Advocate Dhami specifically referenced the case of Balwant Singh Rajoana, stating that despite observations from the Supreme Court, the government has yet to make a decision regarding the commutation of his death sentence. The SGPC president also brought attention to the situation of Jagtar Singh Hawara, whose elderly mother is reported to be in critical health. Dhami emphasized the significance of the mother-son relationship and argued that it was inappropriate to restrict their meetings to a single day under conditional terms, especially when the mother is in the final stages of her life.
He appealed to the government to consider a humanitarian decision and grant Hawara permission to meet his mother after a prolonged separation. The SGPC president reiterated that the committee has consistently raised the issue of Sikh prisoners and will continue its efforts towards their release. He confirmed that representatives and officials from the SGPC had previously attended a meeting with the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha and pledged their support.
Dhami urged that the cases of Sikh prisoners should not be viewed solely through the lens of legal procedures. He stressed the importance of considering their humanitarian and constitutional aspects, advocating for a more comprehensive approach by the authorities. He called upon the Sikh community to lend their support to the peaceful and constitutional struggle being undertaken for the release of these prisoners, reaffirming that the SGPC would persistently pursue the matter through its own channels.
