NEW DELHI, August 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday highlighted the significant expansion of social security coverage in India, stating that the number of beneficiaries has surged from 25 crore before 2014 to 100 crore within the past decade. Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on Independence Day, the Prime Minister emphasized that reaching the last person is integral to the vision of a developed India.
Information was available with The Chenab Times detailing that Prime Minister Modi underscored the transformation in social security, remarking, “Before 2014, only 25 crore people had social security cover. We have provided social security cover to 100 crore countrymen within a decade.” This statement contrasts the previous seven decades with the achievements of the last ten years, indicating a substantial increase in welfare outreach.
The Prime Minister further elaborated on the tangible benefits of these social security and welfare measures reaching families. He specifically referenced the Ayushman Bharat scheme, noting that elderly individuals above 70 years of age are now receiving free medical treatment with coverage up to ₹5 lakh. This highlights a focused effort on providing essential healthcare access to vulnerable sections of the population.
Beyond social security, the address also touched upon the creation of new employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for the youth over the last decade. The Prime Minister pointed to the success of the Startup India initiative, which has facilitated the growth of over 2.5 lakh registered startups. These ventures are not only providing self-employment but also generating jobs for others, contributing to economic dynamism.
Several government initiatives were cited as catalysts for this growth in employment and entrepreneurship. These include the ₹1 lakh crore Innovation Fund, Skill India, and Digital India programs. The opening up of sectors such as space and aviation, alongside the National Drone Policy, have also been instrumental in fostering new avenues for skill development and job creation. The Prime Minister also mentioned the expansion of airport infrastructure, new air routes, and advancements in aircraft manufacturing and maintenance as further employment generators for skilled workers.
