SRINAGAR: The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) has transferred its patented production technology for three high-value exotic mushrooms—Shiitake, King Oyster, and Enoki—to the Jammu and Kashmir Department of Agriculture. This move is expected to facilitate the wider adoption of the technology by local farmers and agri-entrepreneurs, potentially enhancing agricultural diversification and income generation in the region.
Technology Developed at SKUAST-K
The technology, developed by the university’s Mushroom Research and Training Centre (MRTC), encompasses comprehensive production protocols and specific strains for the cultivation of these exotic mushrooms. The objective of the transfer is to move this specialized knowledge beyond the university’s research facilities and into commercial cultivation, making it accessible to a broader agricultural community.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that a significant aspect of this innovation is its utilization of locally available woody agricultural and horticultural biomass, including waste from apple pruning, as a substrate for cultivation. This approach offers a sustainable alternative for managing materials that are often discarded or burned, thereby transforming horticultural waste into a potential source of additional income.
SKUAST-K Vice Chancellor, Professor Nazir Ahmad Ganai, highlighted the technology’s potential to steer agriculture towards higher-value and more resource-efficient production methods. He noted that exotic mushrooms typically command considerably higher market prices than conventional varieties, presenting opportunities for small enterprises, rural youth, women, and agricultural graduates to develop new ventures.
Economic Potential and Agricultural Diversification
The university has projected that the potential for mushroom production using apple-pruning wood alone could be substantial, potentially supporting the annual cultivation of approximately 3.4 lakh tonnes of premium mushrooms. This is estimated to have a market value of around ₹17,000 crore, illustrating the significant economic opportunity if the technology can be successfully commercialized. However, the actual production figures will be contingent upon factors such as the consistent availability and collection of biomass, the scaling of cultivation capacity, market demand, and the development of necessary infrastructure.
The technology transfer initiative was coordinated by SKUAST-K’s Directorate of Research under the framework of the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP).
Director Agriculture, Sartaj Ahmad Shah, emphasized the growing importance of agricultural diversification due to increasing pressure on land and other resources, alongside evolving market demands. He stated that mushroom cultivation requires a relatively small land footprint and can serve as a high-value agricultural activity.
Pilot Initiatives and Future Prospects
The university reported that several entrepreneurs, including SKUAST-K students Munnazah Naseer and Kamran Showkat, have already begun implementing the technology on a pilot scale and have indicated its commercial viability. Dr. Khursheed Ahmad Bhat, Assistant Professor and in-charge of the Mushroom Research and Training Centre, provided detailed insights into the production systems, substrate preparation, infrastructure prerequisites, crop management techniques, and enterprise development aspects associated with this technology.
SKUAST-K further stated that its MRTC has developed a total of four patented mushroom strains and associated technologies. A dedicated publication focusing on exotic mushroom cultivation and the effective utilization of woody agricultural and horticultural waste was also released during the technology transfer event.
This transfer grants the Agriculture Department access to a technology that could potentially synergize two of Jammu and Kashmir’s existing agricultural strengths: its abundant horticultural biomass and its capacity for high-value food production. The broader significance of this development will ultimately be determined by its successful transition from pilot cultivation to viable enterprises, supported by robust supply chains, consistent technical assistance, and established markets.
For the apple economy of Jammu and Kashmir, this initiative holds particular relevance, as it offers a pathway to transform apple pruning wood from a waste product into a valuable input for a new, value-added agricultural activity.
