In addition to the direct contribution, Mr Gangwal has pledged to provide matching grants. This means he will match funds raised from other supporters, up to a ceiling of ₹300 crore, further bolstering the resources available for the School’s advancement.

The development plans for the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology are ambitious, envisioning a state-of-the-art 500-bed super-speciality hospital situated directly on the IIT Kanpur campus. Complementing this facility will be a proposed 200-bed cancer care research centre. These institutions are designed not only to provide advanced medical education and facilitate cutting-edge clinical research but also to enhance healthcare delivery across the region.

A key objective behind the establishment of these facilities is to foster an environment where doctors, researchers, engineers, and technology experts can collaborate effectively. This interdisciplinary approach is intended to address emerging and complex healthcare challenges through innovation and the application of advanced technologies.

Professor Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, highlighted the institute’s strategic decision to establish a medical school. He stated that this venture was driven by the recognition of the immense potential for interdisciplinary research and innovation, particularly at the intersection of engineering, technology, and medicine. The aim is to fundamentally transform healthcare delivery throughout India, with a specific focus on improving services in Uttar Pradesh.

Professor Agrawal further elaborated, “Recognizing the potential of interdisciplinary research and innovation in engineering technology and medicine to transform healthcare delivery across India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, IIT Kanpur ventured into establishing a medical school. In 2022, Gangwal contributed ₹100 crore, which greatly helped the Institute set the plans in motion. This additional contribution of ₹300 crore by Mr Gangwal will help us bring this vision into reality sooner.”

The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is conceptualised to integrate the distinct strengths of IIT Kanpur in engineering, science, and technology with the domain of medical sciences. Its academic programmes and research initiatives will focus on advanced learning, interdisciplinary inquiry, futuristic medical practices, and innovations in MedTech.

Professor Anil K Lalwani, who has been recently appointed as the Dean of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, expressed his optimism about the School’s impact. He noted that the School’s core vision of harmonising medicine, technology, and innovation for the betterment of society is expected to extend its influence significantly beyond the immediate confines of IIT Kanpur, contributing to national healthcare advancements.
