NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday marked the tenth anniversary of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), calling it a significant turning point in India’s digital payment landscape and a source of national pride due to its immense scale.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the UPI, launched on August 25, 2016, by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the supervision of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has become the bedrock of the nation’s digital payment infrastructure and a key enabler of financial inclusion.
In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi stated, “A decade ago, UPI was rolled out, marking a major turning point in India’s digital payments journey. The sheer scale and reach of UPI are something every Indian must be proud of.” He also invited citizens to share their personal experiences and the impact UPI has had on their lives.
The UPI has witnessed a remarkable trajectory over the past ten years. Transaction volumes have surged dramatically, escalating from a modest 1.78 crore in the fiscal year 2016-17 to over 24,162 crore transactions in 2025-26. This represents an extraordinary increase of nearly 13,000 times in the number of transactions processed.
Concurrently, the value of these transactions has also seen substantial growth. It rose from Rs 0.07 lakh crore in 2016-17 to an estimated Rs 314 lakh crore in 2025-26, signifying a cumulative increase of more than 4,000 times in transaction value over the decade.
The UPI is recognized as one of the most successful components of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). It provides a unified, interoperable, and real-time payment system that facilitates effortless peer-to-peer and peer-to-merchant transactions through a single application, as per an official release.
This digital innovation has democratized access to financial services, enabling millions of Indians, including those in remote areas, to participate in the digital economy. Its user-friendly interface and widespread adoption have made it an indispensable tool for everyday financial activities.
The success of UPI is attributed to the collaborative efforts of the government, regulatory bodies, banks, and technology providers. Its continuous evolution, incorporating new features and security enhancements, has further solidified its position as a global benchmark for digital payment systems.
The platform’s interoperability allows users to link multiple bank accounts and conduct transactions across different banks and payment service providers seamlessly. This has fostered a competitive environment among digital payment apps, leading to better services and innovation.
The exponential growth in UPI transactions underscores a fundamental shift in consumer behavior and a growing trust in digital payment mechanisms. It has also played a crucial role in formalizing the economy by bringing more transactions into the digital fold, thereby enhancing transparency and accountability.
Looking ahead, the UPI is expected to continue its expansion, both domestically and internationally, as more countries explore adopting similar payment infrastructures. Its journey over the past decade serves as a testament to India’s prowess in digital innovation and its commitment to building a digitally empowered society.
