Srinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences to Nepal following devastating flash floods that have claimed numerous lives and left hundreds missing. India has pledged full humanitarian assistance to its neighbour as rescue and relief efforts are underway.
The Chenab Times has learned that Prime Minister Modi communicated with his Nepali counterpart, Balendra Shah, to convey solidarity and offer support. The flash floods, which struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district bordering Tibet on Wednesday, have resulted in extensive damage and a significant number of casualties.
In a communication on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi stated, “Spoke to Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed condolences on the loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal. The people of India stand in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in Nepal at this difficult time.” He further added, “India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal. Our teams are coordinating closely on rescue and relief efforts.”
The severe weather event has caused widespread destruction, sweeping through two central districts of Nepal and impacting settlements along the river. Preliminary reports indicate that at least a dozen hydropower projects have been damaged. The full extent of the devastation is still being assessed.
As rescue operations continue, at least 105 Indian nationals are reported to be among the nearly 400 people missing in the aftermath of the disaster. The sudden and massive nature of the floods has overwhelmed local response capabilities, necessitating international support.
The Indian government’s offer of assistance includes humanitarian aid and close coordination on rescue and relief operations, underscoring the strong bilateral ties between India and Nepal. Relief teams are reportedly in communication with their Nepali counterparts to ensure efficient deployment of resources and personnel.
The affected region in Nepal faces significant challenges in the recovery process, with extensive damage to infrastructure and homes. The government of Nepal is working with international partners, including India, to address the immediate crisis and plan for long-term rehabilitation efforts.
