SRINAGAR, Aug 26: Jammu and Kashmir Police have apprehended two individuals in connection with a series of gold ornament theft and snatching incidents in and around Sopore. The arrests have led to the recovery of seven pairs of stolen gold earrings, marking a significant breakthrough for the authorities.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the investigation was initiated following a complaint registered at Police Station Sopore, concerning FIR No. 192/2026. A woman from Seelo had reported being approached by an unknown assailant who, under threat of a knife, forcibly took her gold earrings. A comprehensive investigation, incorporating CCTV footage analysis, technical intelligence, field verification, and suspect examinations, culminated in the identification and arrest of Ishfaq Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Haripora, Langate, Handwara. The stolen earrings from this specific case were recovered based on his statement.
Further scrutiny of Bhat’s activities and interrogation revealed his alleged involvement in other registered cases, including FIR No. 207/2025 and FIR No. 55/2026, both registered at Police Station Sopore. The police statement detailed a pattern wherein the accused reportedly targeted vulnerable individuals, particularly elderly women. He is alleged to have approached them under the guise of offering assistance with government welfare schemes. Once trust was established, he would allegedly persuade them to remove their gold ornaments, subsequently absconding with the valuables. In some instances, the thefts were reportedly carried out using force or intimidation.
During the ongoing recovery efforts, police successfully retrieved seven pairs of gold earrings. While some of these have been directly linked to the registered cases, the remaining ornaments have been secured under relevant legal provisions pending identification and verification by their rightful owners. The investigation has also led to the arrest of Sayed Ahmed Khan, a goldsmith from Sangrama, who is accused of acting as a receiver of stolen property. His potential connections to other similar incidents are currently under investigation.
The police have affirmed their commitment to conducting professional, evidence-based investigations and taking swift action against criminal activities that threaten the safety and property of citizens. In light of these arrests and ongoing investigations, the public, especially senior citizens, are being advised to exercise caution when approached by unknown individuals offering unsolicited help. Authorities urge residents to report any suspicious activity immediately to the nearest police station.
