The Karnataka government has set up a dedicated helpline and an online portal to provide assistance to its residents who may be stranded in Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region due to the recent flash floods. The initiative aims to collect information about affected individuals and coordinate with central agencies for their safe evacuation and rescue.
State Emergency Operation Centre Activated
Following the devastating flash floods that have impacted Nepal and caused disruptions along the Nepal-Tibet border, the Karnataka Revenue Department has activated its State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). The SEOC is actively gathering information to assist people from Karnataka who might be currently stranded in the affected regions. Residents or their families are urged to provide details through a designated Google Form, enabling authorities to contact and support those in need.
The Karnataka government is coordinating its efforts with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) through the Embassy of India in Nepal and the Embassy of India in Beijing. This collaboration is crucial for assessing the situation, maintaining contact with stranded individuals, and facilitating their safe return. The helpline numbers established by the state are 1070 and 080-22253707. Additionally, an email address, seockarnataka@gmail.com, has been provided for communication.
Coordinated Rescue Efforts Underway
The flash floods, which occurred due to an avalanche blocking a tributary of the Bhotekoshi River, have caused widespread destruction, leading to significant loss of life and property. Reports indicate that hundreds of people, including Indian nationals, have been reported missing in the disaster. In response, multiple state governments across India, along with the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, have activated emergency helplines to offer assistance to affected citizens.
The Indian Embassy in Nepal has also provided emergency contact numbers for Indian nationals seeking help, which are also accessible via WhatsApp. These numbers include +977 985 131 6807, +977 970 910 7500, and +977 981 032 6117. The Embassy is working in tandem with Nepalese authorities to streamline rescue and relief operations for Indians caught in the calamity.
Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge stated that approximately 130 to 140 Indians are reported missing, though the exact figures are still being ascertained. He confirmed that the state government is in continuous contact with the MEA to gather precise details of Karnataka residents who might be stranded. Reports of stranded individuals have been received from districts such as Belagavi and Kalaburagi. The state government has appealed to the public to share any information regarding missing persons from Karnataka with local police stations or district Superintendents of Police, ensuring that vital communication channels remain open for relatives and friends seeking updates.
The initiative by the Karnataka government underscores the urgent need for a coordinated response to assist citizens caught in natural disasters abroad. The provision of helplines and online forms aims to streamline information gathering and facilitate timely support for those affected by the tragic events in Nepal.
