Kapurthala, Punjab – The Kapurthala police have exhumed the body of a 25-year-old youth 14 days after his death, following allegations by his family that he succumbed to a suspected drug overdose administered by his friends. The incident, which has raised serious questions about drug abuse and its fatal consequences, occurred in Desal village.
Amandeep Singh, a resident of Desal village, had been reported missing by his family on August 14. During the subsequent police investigation, it emerged that Singh had allegedly been given drugs by his friends, leading to his death. The police have since registered a case against two of his friends, Varinder and Palvinder, also known as Ajay, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those related to causing the disappearance of evidence and kidnapping or abducting in order to murder.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Sub-Inspector Dilbag Singh of the Fattudhinga police station stated that the two accused were detained and interrogated after the family lodged a formal complaint. During questioning, the accused reportedly confessed to burying the body in a field. A third accomplice has also been nominated in the case based on information provided by the detained individuals.
The family of Amandeep Singh had informed the Fattudhinga police about his disappearance on August 14, after he left home with friends and did not return. Despite initial efforts, no trace of him was found for several days. The breakthrough in the case came three days prior to the exhumation, when a formal complaint led to the arrest of the two accused.
During their interrogation, Varinder and Palvinder allegedly admitted to having consumed drugs along with Amandeep Singh on the night of August 14. They claimed that Amandeep’s health deteriorated, and they subsequently abandoned him in the fields. The police report indicates that he died the following day, after which the friends buried his body in the field and attempted to conceal the incident.
The exhumation on Thursday, approximately 14 days after the alleged incident, is a crucial step in the ongoing investigation. Mobile phone records of Amandeep Singh, upon examination, also reportedly revealed that his last communications were with some of his friends, corroborating the initial suspicions.
Sultanpur Lodhi Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dheerendra Verma confirmed that Amandeep had gone missing on August 14. He stated, “After a formal complaint three days ago, the accused duo was arrested and confessed to administering him drugs. A third person has also since been nominated. Whether the cause of death is a drug overdose can only be established conclusively after the post-mortem report comes out.”
The body of Amandeep Singh has been taken into police custody and transported to the Civil Hospital in Kapurthala, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled to be conducted. This examination is expected to provide definitive answers regarding the cause of death and will be critical evidence in the ongoing legal proceedings against the accused.
The case highlights the pervasive issue of drug abuse among youth and the tragic consequences that can arise from substance abuse and the subsequent attempts to cover up such incidents. The police are continuing their investigation to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding Amandeep Singh’s death and to ensure that justice is served.
