The Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) has announced its complete backing for an upcoming padyatra (foot march) between Kargil and Leh, scheduled from September 10 to September 24. The march aims to bolster demands for statehood for Ladakh and the inclusion of the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, alongside seeking justice for victims of events on September 24.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the alliance reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful and democratic struggle for the constitutional and legitimate rights of the people of Ladakh. The decision to support the padyatra was finalized following a crucial meeting attended by KDA Co-Chairmen Asgar Ali Karbalai and Sajjad Kargili, along with other KDA members and concerned stakeholders.
KDA Vows Continued Democratic Struggle
KDA Co-Chairman Asgar Ali Karbalai stated at a press conference that the alliance would persistently pursue the constitutional, democratic, and legitimate rights of the people of Ladakh through peaceful means. He emphasized that the struggle would continue until the Union Territory administration and the Government of India acknowledge and address the valid rights and demands of the residents of both Kargil and Leh districts.
The padyatra is being organized by the Socialist Party and various civil and political organizations to demonstrate solidarity with Ladakh’s aspirations. The march is designed to highlight the collective voice of the region on critical issues.
Padyatra Route and Objectives
The proposed march will commence from Kargil on September 10, with the KDA taking responsibility for its coordination up to Haniskot. From Haniskot onwards to Leh, the coordination will be managed by the Leh Apex Body (LAB). The rally is set to conclude in Leh on September 24, marked by a candlelight vigil.
This vigil will commemorate the events of September 24, 2025, a date marked by tragedy when four young individuals lost their lives during protests in Leh, with hundreds others injured and detained. The padyatra intends to express solidarity with the victims and their families, and to press for justice, accountability, and a conclusive resolution to the issues that precipitated the incident.
Organizers stressed that the padyatra is not adversarial towards any individual or political party but represents a broad-based people’s movement focused on securing democratic and constitutional rights for the residents of Ladakh. Prominent figures, including Members of Parliament, civil society representatives, social activists, and public figures from across the country, are anticipated to join the march. Social activist Sandeep Pandey is among those expected to participate.
During the press conference, KDA Co-Chairman and Padyatra Convenor Sajjad Kargili is slated to provide regular media updates throughout the march and will lead the procession alongside Sandeep Pandey. All stakeholders present at the meeting reiterated their pledge to provide unwavering support to the KDA and ensure the successful execution of the padyatra. They underscored the importance of resolving Ladakh’s challenges through dialogue, democratic engagement, and active public participation.
