In a deeply concerning incident in Rajouri, a newborn baby has reportedly died during delivery, and the mother is currently on ventilator support at the Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri after alleged complications arose during a delivery conducted in a private room outside the hospital premises.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the woman, a resident of Mammankote in Chassana tehsil of Reasi district, was brought to GMC Rajouri for childbirth. Her family alleges that she was taken from the hospital to a private room by a female nursing staffer, an ASHA worker, and another individual with the promise of facilitating a normal delivery.
According to the woman’s husband, complications developed during the delivery process in the private room, leading to the death of the newborn. The mother’s condition reportedly deteriorated significantly due to excessive bleeding, necessitating immediate critical care and placement on a ventilator at GMC Rajouri.
The distraught husband has lodged a complaint with the authorities, demanding stringent action against those allegedly responsible for the incident. He has detailed how the nursing staffer, ASHA worker, and another woman persuaded them to shift to a private room for the delivery.
The Rajouri Police have confirmed taking cognizance of a written complaint received at Police Station Rajouri concerning the circumstances surrounding the stillbirth of the newborn. The police statement indicated the involvement of two individuals, including a female employee of GMC Rajouri, in the case.
Consequently, an First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at Police Station Rajouri. FIR No. 465/2026 has been filed under Sections 106(1)/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police investigation is actively underway to ascertain the sequence of events that led to the infant’s death and to determine the extent of involvement of the individuals named in the complaint.
In parallel, the Government Medical College and Associated Hospital Rajouri has initiated its own internal inquiry into the matter. A four-member committee has been constituted to conduct a detailed probe into the death of the newborn of the woman from Chassana, Reasi, amidst serious allegations of hospital staffers’ involvement.
The order for the inquiry was issued by Principal GMC Rajouri Prof. (Dr.) A.S. Bhatia on September 7. The committee’s formation comes in response to a viral video circulating on social media that pertains to the death of the newborn of Sushma Devi, wife of Ragveer, a resident of Chasana, Reasi. The video and subsequent allegations have brought the alleged involvement of hospital staffers from GMC & AH Rajouri under scrutiny.
The inquiry committee has been tasked with conducting an in-depth investigation into all aspects of the incident and recommending appropriate further actions. The committee is expected to submit its comprehensive report to the Principal’s office within three days.
The inquiry committee comprises Medical Superintendent Dr. Shamim Ahmed as Chairman, HoD Obstetrics and Gynaecology Dr. Chander Sheikhar as Member, HoD ENT Dr. Vidushi Badyal as Member, and Administrative Officer Hanan Shawl (JKAS) as Member Secretary. This hospital-level inquiry aims to meticulously ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic event and examine the alleged role of hospital staff before any definitive actions are decided upon.
