NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge reiterated the party’s steadfast support for the people of Ladakh in their pursuit of robust constitutional safeguards. Kharge emphasized the critical need for protections encompassing land, employment, the fragile environment, and the distinct cultural identity of the region.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Kharge also called for a thorough judicial inquiry into the deaths of four individuals during protests demanding statehood and constitutional protections for Ladakh. He stressed that the investigation must ensure accountability and uncover the truth behind the tragic events.
The protests, which turned violent on September 24, 2025, in Leh, saw police fire upon demonstrators, resulting in the fatalities. Kharge marked the occasion by paying homage to the deceased and expressing solidarity with their families.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Kharge stated, “On Martyrs’ Day, we pay our solemn homage to them and stand in complete solidarity with their families.” He underscored the urgency for the ongoing judicial inquiry to establish the full truth and deliver justice without bias.
“The people of Ladakh have waited long enough for their legitimate aspirations to be addressed,” Kharge asserted. He added, “The Congress party stands firmly with their demand for meaningful Constitutional safeguards, including the Sixth Schedule, to protect Ladakh’s land, employment, fragile environment, culture and identity.”
The Congress leader further emphasized the importance of restoring democratic and representative institutions in Ladakh. He stressed that the region’s inhabitants must have a significant voice in shaping their own future. The demand for statehood has been a central issue for the people of Ladakh, leading to the significant clashes witnessed last year.
The Sixth Schedule of the Constitution provides certain special provisions for the administration of tribal areas in four northeastern states. Proponents in Ladakh are seeking similar provisions to safeguard their unique land, culture, and economic interests from external influences, particularly in the context of rapid development and infrastructure projects in the Union Territory.
