The challenging Rally of Himalayas commenced from Devlok at 15 Mile near Manali, Himachal Pradesh, on Saturday, with approximately 220 participants commencing a high-altitude motorsport expedition across Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. The event, featuring both cars and motorcycles, was flagged off by Manali MLA Bhuvneshwar Gaur.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that this year’s rally marks a significant milestone as it traverses the 16,580-foot-high Shinkula Pass in Lahaul and Spiti for the first time before entering the remote Padum and Zanskar valley in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The route is designed to test competitors’ skills and endurance across some of the most inaccessible and high-altitude landscapes in the Himalayan region, featuring difficult roads, steep mountain passes, and unpredictable weather conditions.
According to organiser Suresh Rana, the rally’s itinerary includes passage through several remote locations such as Jispa, Kaza, Shinkula Pass, Kunzum Pass, and Padum. This route selection aims to offer participants a comprehensive experience of the region’s demanding terrain while simultaneously showcasing its diverse natural beauty and the lives of its remote communities.
The schedule indicates that participants were set to reach Kaza on Sunday and were to travel from Kaza to Jispa on September 28. The subsequent leg of the rally is planned from Jispa to Padum on September 29, with the event slated for conclusion on September 30. The first iteration of the Rally of Himalayas took place in 2021 with an initial participation of around 30 individuals. Since its inception, the rally has seen substantial growth, attracting over 200 participants this year from various parts of the country.
Organizers stated that a primary objective of the rally is to foster adventure tourism within the Himalayan region. The event seeks to highlight the natural splendor, cultural richness, and tourism potential of Lahaul-Spiti and Ladakh, aiming to draw visitors from both domestic and international locales. Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Manali MLA Bhuvneshwar Gaur remarked that such events have the potential to invigorate motorsports and simultaneously generate tourism and local employment opportunities. He added that adventure-based activities can effectively attract visitors to remote Himalayan areas, thereby creating economic avenues for local populations.
The rally’s course, which winds through high-altitude passes and isolated valleys, effectively merges motorsport with an exploration of the Himalayas’ most formidable and visually striking terrains.
