Information was available with The Chenab Times that the seven accused arrived at the scene in an unregistered black Scorpio SUV, their faces obscured by masks. According to police reports, they allegedly ambushed one of the victims as he approached their vehicle, attacking him with iron pipes. When two associates of the initial victim intervened to help, they too were subjected to an assault, reportedly being struck with iron pipes and physically assaulted. All three victims sustained injuries as a result of the coordinated attack. Following the assault, the perpetrators quickly fled the location in their SUV, leaving the injured victims behind.

Authorities at the Aut Police Station received notification of the incident and promptly initiated action. An First Information Report (FIR) was registered on October 4 under Sections 109, 126(2), 115(2), 190, and 191(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), a relatively new criminal code that replaced certain provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

Following the registration of the FIR, the Mandi district police launched an intensive investigation and swiftly apprehended all seven alleged suspects. The arrested individuals have been identified as residents of Rohtak district in the neighboring state of Haryana. Their names are Aneet, Pradeep, Manjeet, Jagdeep, Ankit, Monit, and Ajay.

The police have stated that further legal proceedings and investigations are underway in accordance with the law. Officials from the Mandi district police have reiterated their commitment to taking prompt action against any form of criminal activity to ensure the maintenance of law and order within the district. The investigation aims to uncover the full details of the rivalry that precipitated the violent confrontation.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which came into effect on July 1, 2024, is part of a set of three new criminal laws enacted by the Indian Parliament to overhaul the country’s penal code, aiming for more efficient and modern justice delivery. The specific sections invoked in the FIR relate to various aspects of criminal conduct, including unlawful assembly, assault, and the use of weapons.

The incident underscores the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining public safety, particularly when incidents are rooted in long-standing disputes that can escalate into violence. The swift apprehension of the seven accused highlights the operational capacity of the Mandi police in responding to such events. The geographical proximity of Rohtak district in Haryana to Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh suggests a potential pattern of inter-state movement for criminal activities, a factor that may be explored further during the ongoing investigation.

The motive behind the assault, identified as an ‘old rivalry,’ suggests a pre-existing conflict that culminated in this physical confrontation. Police are expected to delve deeper into the nature of this rivalry, potentially questioning individuals beyond the immediate perpetrators and victims to establish a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to the incident. The use of masks and an unregistered vehicle by the accused points towards a planned attack rather than an impulsive act of violence.

The victims, who sustained injuries from iron pipes and physical blows, are reportedly receiving medical attention. The severity of their injuries will likely play a role in the subsequent legal proceedings. The BNS, under which the case is being prosecuted, aims to streamline the criminal justice process, and its application in this case will be closely watched.

The arrested individuals are expected to be presented before a judicial magistrate for remand proceedings, during which the police will likely seek custody to further their investigation, including identifying any other potential accomplices and recovering the alleged weapons used in the assault. The recovery of the black Scorpio SUV used in the commission of the crime is also a priority for the investigating team.

The general atmosphere in Nagwain and surrounding areas of Mandi district has been one of concern following the incident, with local residents emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and order. Police presence in sensitive areas is likely to be increased to deter any further retaliatory actions or disturbances.
