Los Angeles-based distributor Dark Star Pictures has acquired the North American rights to the Cypriot horror film ‘Motherwitch.’ The deal was finalized in anticipation of the film’s upcoming screening at the prestigious Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia.
The Chenab Times has learned that the acquisition was brokered by Arnaud Chevalier, representing his Paris-based sales firm B-Rated International Sales. This marks a significant step for the Cyprus-produced film, positioning it for a theatrical and digital release across the United States and Canada.
‘Motherwitch’ is set to debut in the competition section of the Sitges Film Festival, a renowned event that serves as a key platform for international genre cinema. The festival, held annually in the coastal town of Sitges, Spain, attracts filmmakers, distributors, and enthusiasts from around the globe, making it a critical venue for new film discoveries and market transactions.
While the full details of the distribution agreement have not been disclosed, the acquisition by Dark Star Pictures signals confidence in the film’s commercial and artistic potential within the North American market. The company has a history of distributing independent and genre films, and ‘Motherwitch’ will likely benefit from their expertise in reaching a wider audience.
The film’s narrative is expected to tap into themes common in the horror genre, though specific plot details remain under wraps ahead of its festival premiere. Cyprus, an island nation in the Eastern Mediterranean, has been an emerging, albeit less frequent, source of international film productions, adding an element of distinct cultural backdrop to the genre.
The sales by B-Rated International Sales extend beyond North America, with further deals reportedly concluded for other territories. These international sales underscore the global appeal of ‘Motherwitch’ and its potential to resonate with diverse audiences familiar with horror storytelling.
The Sitges Film Festival is known for showcasing a wide range of horror, fantasy, and science fiction films, often premiering critically acclaimed and commercially successful titles. ‘Motherwitch’s’ inclusion in the festival program suggests it has met the rigorous selection criteria, indicating a level of quality and originality that aligns with the festival’s focus.
The festival is scheduled to run for its usual duration, culminating in an awards ceremony that recognizes outstanding achievements in genre filmmaking. The performance of ‘Motherwitch’ at Sitges, both in terms of audience reception and potential awards, will likely influence its subsequent distribution strategy and market performance following the North American release.
