Chennai: In an effort to bolster awareness and promote early detection of breast cancer, various healthcare institutions across Chennai have been organizing a series of health camps and informational programs. These initiatives aim to educate the public, particularly women, on the critical importance of regular screening and self-examination.
Iswarya Hospital in Taramani recently hosted a unique ‘Villupattu’ program titled ‘Varumunnar Kaappom,’ which translates to ‘Prevention is Better than Cure.’ This traditional folk art form was utilized to convey vital messages about breast cancer prevention, the significance of early detection, and the availability of screening methods such as mammography and self-examination. Dr. Deepa Chegu, Director and Senior Consultant at Iswarya Breast Centre, addressed the attendees, emphasizing the need for timely medical intervention and outlining the screening procedures. S. Rajasundaram, Director of Oncology and CEO of Iswarya Hospital, also underscored the importance of awareness and prompt medical attention, with breast cancer survivors sharing their personal experiences to offer hope and encouragement.
Earlier, the Apollo Cancer Centre and Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai launched an innovative campaign called ‘Check-O-Late.’ This initiative involved distributing dark chocolate bars, each containing a QR code that links to an animated video demonstrating breast self-examination techniques. The campaign seeks to serve as a recurring reminder for women to prioritize their breast health. A panel discussion featuring senior consultants in radiation oncology, surgical oncology, and breast surgery was also held. The event was graced by MasterChef India – Tamil Season 1 winner Devaki Vijayaraman, who unveiled a chocolate wall, symbolizing the sweet reminder to focus on health.
In a separate initiative aimed at breaking societal barriers, Apollo Cancer Centre organized a ‘Men in Pink Walkathon’ in Besant Nagar. This event encouraged men to become advocates for women’s breast health, prompting conversations and promoting regular screening among their female family members and friends. The campaign highlighted that while women often prioritize the health of others, men can play a crucial role in encouraging them to undergo timely screenings. The walkathon saw participation from various community groups, including students and members of Rotary clubs. Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Ms. Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, inaugurated the event, emphasizing the collective responsibility in combating breast cancer.
The Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital (TNGMSSH) at Omandurar Estate also conducted a ‘Pink October’ awareness program. Nursing students participated in a rally, carrying placards to disseminate messages about breast cancer prevention and symptom awareness. The event included sharing of treatment journeys by breast cancer survivors, with Dr. R. Mani, Director of TNGMSSH, also in attendance.
VS Hospitals inaugurated its third super-speciality facility in Tondiarpet, North Chennai, with a commitment to expanding access to comprehensive cancer care. As part of its outreach, the hospital is offering free breast cancer screening services throughout the month. This new facility boasts 130 beds and a wide array of specialized medical services, including a dedicated oncology center, aiming to provide timely diagnosis and patient-centered care closer to home.
These multifaceted efforts across Chennai underscore a concerted push towards increasing breast cancer awareness, encouraging early detection, and ensuring that accessible screening and treatment options are available to all women in the region.
