A growing international movement is mobilizing young professionals to address critical global challenges related to climate change and disaster risk reduction (DRR). Organizations like the Climate Conscious Young Professionals Society (YCPs) and initiatives under the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) are fostering networks and providing platforms for youth to develop essential skills, share knowledge, and lead impactful projects.

The Chenab Times has learned that these efforts aim to equip young individuals with the understanding and tools necessary to contribute effectively to building more resilient and sustainable communities worldwide. Through a variety of activities, including workshops, training sessions, and collaborative projects, young professionals are being empowered to become agents of change in their local contexts and beyond.

Fostering Green Literacy and Action

The Climate Conscious Young Professionals (YCP) project, for instance, focuses on promoting civic education among young adults across Europe. It aims to enhance green literacy by providing in-depth knowledge on sustainability and developing personal skills. Participants engage with experts, grassroots actors, and innovators, breaking down complex concepts like the European Green Deal and developing actionable green mini-projects. These initiatives are designed to be implemented in their home communities, raising local environmental awareness and promoting sustainable practices.

Beyond Europe, similar movements are gaining momentum. The Special Topic Group on Young Professionals in DRR and Climate Change, coordinated by the International Centre of Excellence Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Research Initiative (ICoE-SEADPRI-UKM), works to disseminate knowledge and build capacity through research and education. This group has incubated platforms like U-INSPIRE Malaysia, which mobilizes youth and young professionals in disaster risk reduction and climate change, connecting them to a network of active youth groups across the region.

Global Networks for Resilience and Adaptation

The UNDRR actively supports initiatives that engage young people in disaster risk reduction. The “Youth for DRR in the Americas” program, for example, highlights the critical role of youth in building resilience to climate change and related threats. These programs emphasize that children and young people, who constitute a significant portion of the global population, stand to benefit most from disaster risk reduction efforts and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Globally, organizations are working to bridge the gap between young leaders and decision-making processes. The Youth Climate Collaborative aims to build a movement that meaningfully includes youth at every level, from local to global, by strengthening skills and expanding access for young people to sustain their leadership. They note that less than 1% of climate finance reaches youth-led efforts, underscoring the need for greater support and investment in these initiatives.

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) has launched a Young Professionals Program (YPP) designed to equip early-career professionals with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to become sustainability champions. This six-week initiative offers participants a deep understanding of corporate sustainability, leadership competencies, and the ability to drive sustainability initiatives within their organizations. The program covers core sustainability topics, including climate crisis mitigation, nature restoration, and tackling inequality.

Youth-Led Policy and Action

Conferences of Youth (LCOY), endorsed by YOUNGO (the youth constituency of the UNFCCC), are national and sub-national events that empower communities and shape national climate policy. These events facilitate inclusive, youth-led participation in climate governance, strengthen national youth climate movements, and build capacity for meaningful engagement in international climate negotiations. Each LCOY produces a National Youth Statement, a consolidated document representing the unified climate demands of a nation’s youth, which contributes to global youth positions ahead of UN Climate Change Conferences (COP).

These collective efforts underscore a global recognition of young professionals’ crucial role in tackling the climate crisis and building resilience to disasters. By fostering collaboration, providing essential skills, and ensuring youth voices are heard in policy and action, these networks are paving the way for a more sustainable and secure future.
