Two scientists from Himachal Pradesh have achieved international recognition by being named among the top 2% of scientists globally, according to a prestigious ranking compiled by Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier. The list highlights researchers based on standardized citation indicators, acknowledging their research productivity, impact, and international collaborations.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Dr. Tarun Sharma, an Assistant Professor at the University Institute of Technology (UIT), Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), has been recognized for his significant contributions. Dr. Sharma, who also serves as the Deputy Director of the Centre for AI on Cyber Physical Systems, has earned this distinction for his work in silicon photonics, nanophotonics, AI for photonics, and neuromorphic photonic computing. His research specifically delves into photonic device fabrication with potential applications in civil and defence sectors, particularly in chip-based sensing technology.
Dr. Sharma received congratulations from UIT Director Prof. Amarjeet Singh and other faculty members. Prof. Pardeep, Director of the Centre for AI on Cyber Physical Systems, and HPU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mahavir Singh lauded the recognition, calling it a milestone that would inspire young researchers and bolster India’s standing in global science and innovation.
In a parallel achievement, Dr. Meenakshi Kanwar Chauhan, a scientist hailing from the Una district of Himachal Pradesh, has also been featured in the world’s top 2% of scientists. This marks her fifth consecutive year of inclusion in the Stanford University-Elsevier World’s Top 2% Scientists list, this time under the single-year citation impact category.
Dr. Chauhan, daughter of Gurbax Singh Kanwar of Amb village, Una district, received her early education in Chandigarh and pursued higher studies at Panjab University. She holds a master’s degree in pharmacy and a PhD. Currently, she is affiliated with the Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (DIPSAR), under the Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University (DPSRU) in New Delhi. At DIPSAR, she is involved in research and academic advancement within pharmaceutical sciences.
Her research interests are concentrated on pharmaceutical nanotechnology, novel drug delivery systems, and advanced therapeutic formulations. Dr. Chauhan’s work particularly emphasizes ocular and transdermal drug delivery, as well as targeted medicine delivery. Her investigations explore innovative methods to enhance the efficacy and safety of medications and ensure their controlled release. These research areas hold promise for the treatment of conditions such as glaucoma, cancer, and various other diseases.
The sustained international visibility and citation impact of Dr. Chauhan’s research are underscored by her consistent inclusion in the single-year citation impact ranking for five consecutive years. This accomplishment also highlights the contributions of Indian pharmaceutical researchers to the advancement of innovative drug delivery technologies and healthcare solutions. The recognition from Stanford University and Elsevier serves as a testament to the quality and influence of scientific research emanating from Himachal Pradesh and India on the global stage.
