In a significant decision, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved a proposal to rename the Noida International Airport located at Jewar as ‘Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar’. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath following a cabinet meeting on Friday, October 9, 2026. The move is seen as a gesture of gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the development of the airport, which the Chief Minister described as a major gift to Uttar Pradesh.
According to Chief Minister Adityanath, the Council of Ministers of Uttar Pradesh expressed its gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing the state with the Noida International Airport at Jewar. He further stated that the airport is poised to become the largest in Uttar Pradesh and is expected to develop into a major aviation hub for the country. The decision to rename the airport also commemorates Prime Minister Modi’s completion of 25 years of continuous service as the head of a government, a milestone he reached on October 7, 2026.
The Noida International Airport, situated in Jewar within the Gautam Buddh Nagar district, is a Greenfield project developed under a public-private partnership involving the Uttar Pradesh government and Zurich Airport International AG. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the airport in November 2021, and it commenced commercial flight operations on June 15, 2026. The airport is intended to serve the broader Delhi-NCR region and western Uttar Pradesh, aiming to enhance air connectivity and support economic activity and tourism in the region.
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet’s approval of the name change is a key step in the renaming process. While the state government has made its decision, the formal implementation of the new name will involve further processes at the Union government level. For travellers, the immediate impact of the name change is not expected to affect flight schedules, services, ticket prices, or airport access arrangements. The focus for passengers remains on the airport’s connectivity, facilities, and operational plans.
The airport’s development is a substantial infrastructure project for Uttar Pradesh, projected to boost the state’s economy, industry, tourism, and global connectivity in the coming years. The decision to rename it after the current Prime Minister is a notable development, as it is relatively unusual in India for a major airport to be named after a sitting Prime Minister. The Chief Minister also highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s long-standing political association with Uttar Pradesh, as he represents the Varanasi constituency in the Lok Sabha.
